A Double Blind Study of Interferon Ointment in the Treatment of Viral Skin Diseases

Abstract
Authors performed a double blind study to evaluate the therapeutic effect of interferon ointmenton the several skin diseases.
We studied a total 129 patients including 80 herpes simplex patients (herpes labialis; 50 patients, herpes progenitalis; 11 patients, and other form of herpes simplex; 19 patients), S3 herpes zoster patients, and 16 varicella patient by topical application of interferon ointment or control group on the early lesion of each diseases.
The estimation of therapeutic effect of interferon ointment was done by the measurement of time interval from the first day of treatment to the days of crust formation. The results were as follows;
1) Herpes simplex; In the interferon ointment applied group, the percentage of herpes labialis patients who showed crust formation within the second day of treatment was 42.9%. The percentage of herpes progenitalis patients and other from of herpes simplex patients were 25. 0% and 29.4% respectively. In the control groups, the percentage of herpes labialis, herpes progenitalis and other form of herpes simplex patients who showed crust formation within the second day of treatment were 33.3%, 0% and 0%, respectively. The all of 3 interferon ointment applied groups showed shorter time of crust formation than those of control groups.
2) Herpes zoster; In the interferon ointment applied group, the percentage of herpes zoster patients who showed crust formation within the 5th day of treatment was 66.7% but those of placebo ointment applied group was 16.7%. The time of crust formation of interferon ointment applied group was shorter than those of control group.
3) Varicella; In the interferon ointment applied group, the percentage of varicella patients who showed crust formation within second day of treatment was 40.0% and those of control groups was 16.7%. The time of crust formation time of interferon ointment applied groups was shorter than those of control group.
